Mailbox installation has its own exact rules based on the government policy and post office regulations. We have to always apply these rules if we do not want to have a problem. Although we can decorate our mailbox freely, there are some must rules we cannot break. One of them is the position of the mailbox. The bottom of the mailbox must be between 41 and 45 inches from the surface of the road. If there is a condition that prevents this, we have to contact the local postmaster for exceptions.
Then, mailbox installation rules say that the front of the mailbox must sit between 6 and 8 inches back from the edge of the road or curb. The mailboxes are required installed on the right-hand side of the road and in the mail carrier’s direction of travel in areas where it would cause a traffic hazard or violate traffic laws to drive on the left-hand side of the road. Besides, if the mailbox has a lock, it must meet the approval of the Postmaster General. The slot must be big enough to handle the daily mail volume. We should make sure that the name on the mailbox is at least one inch high.
In addition, the mailbox installation also highlights that the post or support assembly should bend if it is struck by a vehicle. It is the responsibility of the mailbox owner to ensure the support is adequate in strength. Ensure the path to the mailbox is clear to enable the mail carrier to deliver the mail efficiently and safely without the post obstructing her. Our hole should be deep enough to bury one-third of the post. Then, we should also make the mailbox more stable by filling the hole with concrete. We can pour dry mix into the hole after placing the new post and add water.
